About aeronautical lights
Aeronautical lights are facilities to aid aircraft aviation by means of lights. There are three types of aeronautical lights: aeronautical beacons, aerodrome lights, and aviation obstruction lights.
Types of aeronautical lights 1. Aeronautical Beacons
An aeronautical beacon is a type of aeronautical light used to mark the route of an aircraft during night flights and flights in instrument meteorological conditions, to ensure safety.
Article 113 of the Regulation for Enforcement of the Civil Aeronautics Act defines the following two types of aeronautical beacons.
-
Landmark beacon
An aeronautical light installed to mark a single specific point for an aircraft in flight.
-
Hazard beacon
Aeronautical beacon installed to mark an area that may be particularly hazardous to aircraft in flight.
Note that aerodrome beacons are not classified as aeronautical lights, but rather as aerodrome lights.
Types of aeronautical lights 2. Aerodrome Lights
These facilities are designed to assist aircraft in safe takeoffs and landings at night and in poor weather by providing information to aircraft landing at the airport on the shape of the runway, angle of approach, and other factors. There are various types of lights such as aerodrome beacons, taxiway edge lights, runway edge lights, approach lights, and others. Under the Civil Aeronautics Act, heliport lights are also included in aerodrome lights.
Types of aeronautical lights 3. Aviation Obstruction Lights
An aviation light that emits a single or group of lights, usually red or white, to alert aircraft in flight to the presence of obstacles. Installed on the surface of a structure or natural formation defined by the height of the obstruction, etc., in accordance with the provisions of the Civil Aeronautics Act.
